Hydrological effects of large dams in Chilean rivers

چکیده
Eight rivers regulated by large dams located in three hydro-climatic zones along the Chilean latitudinal gradient. We performed a multi-temporal scale analysis of flow records and we used data from official gauging stations to characterise non-altered altered river regimes determine magnitude persistence hydrological alteration downstream Chile. These analyses provide relevant information improve understanding such alterations, conceptual basis for assessing future impacts as country plans build series coming years. The mean annual runoff was reduced all study rivers. monthly flows northern arid zone were most affected dams. frequency floods decreased Moreover, drier systems did not recover their conditions distance dams, probably due transmission losses water extractions diversions; contrast, southern partially recovered with downstream, mainly inflows permanent non-regulated tributaries. So far, this is first Chile that comprehensively effects

Downstream hydrologic and geomorphic effects of large dams on American rivers
The hydrology and geomorphology of large rivers in America reflect the pervasive influence of an extensive water control infrastructure including more than 75,000 dams. One hundred thirty-seven of the very large dams, each storing 1.2 km (10 acre feet) of water or more, alter the flows of every large river in the country. The hydrologic effects of these very large dams emerge from an analysis o...

متن کاملSurvival of Migrating Salmon Smolts in Large Rivers With and Without Dams
The mortality of salmon smolts during their migration out of freshwater and into the ocean has been difficult to measure. In the Columbia River, which has an extensive network of hydroelectric dams, the decline in abundance of adult salmon returning from the ocean since the late 1970s has been ascribed in large measure to the presence of the dams, although the completion of the hydropower syste...
متن کاملPotential effects of dams on migratory fish in the Mekong River: lessons from salmon in the Fraser and Columbia Rivers.
We compared the effects of water resource development on migratory fish in two North American rivers using a descriptive approach based on four high-level indicators: (1) trends in abundance of Pacific salmon, (2) reliance on artificial production to maintain fisheries, (3) proportion of adult salmon that are wild- versus hatchery-origin, and (4) number of salmon populations needing federal pro...
